The <\/span>Borgo of Ugento<\/i><\/b>, popularly known as \u201c<\/span>U Burgu<\/i><\/b>\u201d and officially listed as <\/span>\u201cBorgo Terra<\/i><\/b>*\u201d, is a district that took shape in the Middle Ages. It lies at the foot of the Norman Castle, later the residence of the Marquises d\u2019Amore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the buildings that make up the Borgo today date back to the 19th century, as does the paving of its narrow alleys. Yet traces of ancient balustrades and <\/span>Mignano-style<\/i><\/b>* balconies still remain, as well as remnants of themed frescoes inside a number of private homes. These are the last witnesses of the 12\u2014perhaps even 18\u2014chapels that once lined the Borgo\u2019s main street, <\/span>Via Salentina<\/i><\/b>. This road is what survives of the more famous <\/span>Via Traiano Sallentina<\/i><\/b>, the Roman route that connected Ugento and the rest of southern Salento with Brindisi and Rome. From the 5th century AD up until the 18th century, it served as a passageway for pilgrims travelling to the <\/span>Basilica of Santa Maria di Leuca.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Until the 1960s, the Borgo was home to the majority of Ugento\u2019s population. Its streets and alleys bustled with artisan workshops, taverns and <\/span>case a corte<\/i><\/b>, the traditional courtyard houses typical of Salento, many of which can still be admired today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Along <\/span>Via Salentina<\/i><\/b> and <\/span>Via della Luce<\/i><\/b> stand two significant artistic landmarks: the sanctuary of<\/span> Saints Cosmas and Damian<\/i><\/b>, whose cult is deeply rooted in local tradition; and the church of <\/span>San Lorenzo<\/i><\/b>, which preserves a fine late-18th-century painting by <\/span>Marciano<\/i><\/b>, a painter from nearby Ruffano.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the lower part of Ugento\u2019s old Borgo\u2014known as the <\/span>scanni<\/i><\/b>, <\/span>scise<\/i><\/b>, or <\/span>pile<\/i><\/b>\u2014rises the Church of the <\/span>Madonna delle Grazie<\/i><\/b> with its attached late-16th-century convent, built by monks of the <\/span>Order of Saint Benedict of the Celestines*<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
